Olivine

Olivine delivers benefits across a range of applications including metallurgy, offshore wind ballasting, water filtration, thermal energy Olivine is a high-purity magnesium–iron silicate mineral with the chemical formula (Mg, Fe)2 SiO4. It’s two main components are iron-rich fayalite and magnesium-rich forsterite, the levels of which determine an olivine’s properties. 

Used in a range of high-tech applications, including:

– Ballasting: for specialist ballast and concrete applications offshore (concrete pipeline coating, wind turbine ballasting, anchoring and oilrig ballasting) and on dry land (bridges, tunnels, radiation-proofing, counterweighting and ballasting).  

– Blast Furnace: as an additive for sinter, pellets and as a blast furnace direct charge material in iron production.  

– Foundry: used as sand for cores and mould construction in both ferrous and non-ferrous metal casting. Non-wetting properties make olivine perfect for manganese steel casting.  

– Thermal Heat Storage: high density combined with high heat capacity make olivine perfect for storing heat energy. 

– Refractory: low thermal conductivity, linear thermal expansion and low reactivity to metals and basic slags. Additionally, olivine has an extremely low carbon footprint.  

– Mineral wool: olivine has MgO, using in high temperature mineral wools for thermal insulation, sound insulation and fire-resistant applications.
